Thermoplastic extrusion gear pumps are positive displacement devices whose operating principle is based on the change in volume during gear meshing. Specifically, a gear pump consists of two gears of the same size rotating in mesh with each other in a tightly fitted housing. When the gears rotate, the volume of the space on the disengaged side of the gears changes from small to large, forming a vacuum that sucks in the liquid; the volume of the space on the meshed side of the gears changes from large to small, squeezing the liquid into the pipeline. The suction chamber and discharge chamber are separated by the meshing line of the two gears. Due to the continuous meshing of the gears, the liquid is mechanically squeezed out continuously, and the pump discharges the same amount for each revolution.

Extruder-related die pressure fluctuations are suppressed from 20:1 to 50:1 and specifications are controlled to a nominal +/-0.25%, improving product consistency and quality.

The gear pump is driven by a separate motor that effectively blocks upstream pressure pulsations and flow fluctuations, which can be controlled to less than 1% at the gear pump outlet.
