Even after installing a melt pump on your cast film extrusion line, you may still encounter product thickness fluctuations. Instead of suspecting the melt pump at once, follow this time-line troubleshooting workflow to locate the source of disturbance.
The core idea is to align all relevant production data on the same time axis, so you can identify where the disturbance enters the system and determine which stabilization tasks the melt pump is supposed to handle.
Step A: Classify the fluctuation type
First, distinguish your fluctuation pattern:
Longitudinal fluctuation: Variations along the film running direction.
Transverse fluctuation: Uneven thickness across the film width.
Combined fluctuation: Both longitudinal and transverse deviations exist at the same time.

Step B: Compare key process signals
Check and cross-reference real-time process data, observing which signal changes first.
Main signals include extruder speed, feeding status, melt pump inlet pressure, pump speed and outlet pressure. Comparing these signals helps you judge whether the disturbance originates upstream of the melt pump.
Step C: Verify process and material changes
Review recent changes in raw materials and formulation settings: material batch difference, recipe adjustment, regrind material ratio and barrel temperature zone modifications. Material viscosity shifts are common triggers of unstable melt flow.

Step D: Inspect downstream components
Check conditions after the melt pump assembly: pressure drop across the screen changer, die head pressure, haul-off speed and cooling system performance. Abnormalities in these downstream links can also lead to film thickness variations.
Step E: Check the melt pump itself at last
Only after eliminating all the above factors do you examine the melt pump unit: drive system, internal gear wear, control system performance and installation status.

The key to troubleshooting abnormal cast film thickness is not to blame the melt pump immediately. You should trace the disturbance source on the shared time-line first. Once you find where the fluctuation enters the extrusion system, you can take targeted corrective actions.
